About Us

The Discovery Center School is an independent, co-educational school for students in Kindergarten through Twelfth grade. The student population richly reflects the diversity represented in the Bay Area with regard to socio-economic, religious, and ethnic differences.

DCS is accredited by the National Independent Schools Association.

Our Program

  • Provides a solid foundation of basic skills
  • Infuses logic and reasoning throughout the learning process
  • Follows Common Core and the California Standards
  • Encourages learning through performance, application, and demonstration
  • Uses University of California entrance requirements
  • Is motivational and of high interest to the students
  • Undergoes review and updating on a regular basis

Philosophy

The Discovery Center School is committed to the overall development of each student.

To this end we provide strong academic instruction in the basic skills as well as a wide variety of cultural and aesthetic experiences within a success-oriented program.

Because there are great differences among students of the same age, factors other than chronological age are considered in planning a program to meet the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical needs of individuals in the classroom.

We believe that students learn best in an environment in which individuality is treasured and nurtured, in which students are encouraged to respond to the needs of others, and in which adult-student interpersonal relationships are characterized by warmth, care, and a deep respect for the welfare of others.

Curriculum

The DCS curriculum uses approved materials from various publishers and incorporates selected manipulative and enrichment materials into the educational program.

  • The Discovery Center School uses Cultural Literacy, the California Frameworks and Standards, as well as Common Core, to assist in the assessment of student achievement. Standardized tests are used to give an indication of student progress.
  • DCS believes it is important for students to clarify and to identify and use many thinking skills and behaviors.
  • Teachers encourage students to communicate effectively and meaningfully. They teach students how to think rather than what to think.
  • Teachers show students how to most effectively demonstrate their knowledge.
  • Teachers use their skills to interest students in the learning process.
